Golden Disc to be replaced
A new series of; awards for recorded music will be offered this year by the Federation of the Phonographic Industry and N.Z.8.C.,! and the Loxene Golden Disc award will be dropped. The N.Z.B.C. said the new series would recognise the wide range of talents called on for the production of a successful recording. The awards would be in 12 categories. These would include the top male and top female vocalist, the top instrumental recording and the top group. Among the other awards will be recognition for the best new artist, the best single recording, the best album, the best sleeve design, and the best New Zealand composition. A special award of merit will be given for the outstanding educational or community service recording. The panel of judges will be drawn from within the recording industry. A voting coupon system has been used in the past. Records qualifying for consideration for the new awards will be nominated by member companies of the federation. All awards would be of equal standing, and there would be no prize money, the N.Z.B.C. said. Instead, like the Hollywood Academy Awards, the new awards would rely on prestige for impact.
