Kenyan crew of Dutch ship
Royal Interocean Line vessels; (Dutch) engaged in the New Zea- ■ land-South and East Africa trade' have recently replaced their; South African (Zulu) crews with[ Kenyans mainly, but also some Tanzanians.
This service is maintained by the Straat Luzon and also the Straat Clement, which is discharging 1235 tons of Soutli and East African cargo at Cashin Quay, and loading 1156 tons for return. There is no particular reason for the crew change, but the company endeavours to en gage crews where practicable, from the countries with which it trades. Some Indonesians are also employed.
Another of the company’s vessels, the Straat Lagos, also in port, lias a Singaporean (Malay and Chinese) crew. She serves the New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia. Bangkok run. Both ships have Dutch officers. A display of bunting aboard the Straat Clement marked Queen Juliana's birthday yesterday.
Since Shaw Savill and Albion, Ltd, P and O, and also Flotta Lauro I Italian l slashed their main line passenger services in this area, in favour of cruising. Lloyd Triestino Line has decided to increase its sailings from Auckland next year to meet heavy booking demands. Nine calls will be made next year, the company has said. This year the liners Galileo Galilei and Guglielmo Marconi will make six mam line voyages to Europe. In addition to Lloyd Triestino filling the vacuum which has arisen, the larger Leonardo Da Vinci owned by the Italian Line might be persuaded to switch from Atlantic service to the Pacific. Both companies are sponsored largely by the Italian Government. Lloyd Triestino should continue its present services until at least 1977, the company has advised. * * #
Huge imports of Japanese manufactured railway rolling stock have arrived at Lyttelton in recent years. The Panamanianregistered, Korean - manned, Japanese • chartered, 3927-ton heavy-lift vessel Quintessence (ex Yeijii Maru), which arrived direct from Kobe last week, has 2750 tons, of c.k.d. rail waggons (R.P. type) for distcharge. They will be assembled locally and used mainly to carry newsprint. The Quintessence also has four electrical transformers (each weighing 37 tons) for local discharge. Union Company vessels carry newsprint from Tauranga regularly, but rail freight, by Cook Strait, eventually might eat into this trade.
»«* V »;* The Cypriot-registered, Greekowned, 8374-ton Elna. under a Japan Line charter, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Napier with 1200 tons of general cargo for discharge. She has Greek Officers and a predominantly Filipino crew. * # *
