Accused not guilty

Benjamin Te Whare Waiikato, aged 36, unemployed, was found not guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of unlawfully taking a car valued at $l5O, the property of Robert Joie Forster, on February 12.

Mr Justice Roper discharged Waikato. Mr G. K. Panckhurst appeared for the Crown and Mr P. N. Duncan for Waikato, who pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that Mr Forster’s car was taken from the back lawn of his home on the night of February 12. The next day Mr Forster was going along Pages Road in a taxi when he saw his car being driven in the opposite direction. He got the taxi to follow his car and it turned into the car park of the Aranui Motor Inn. The police were informed and a detective kept a watch on the car. It was stopped after it was driven off by Sonny Tauria Rewi, a prison inmate, who claimed he got the car keys from Waikato. Waikato made a statement (in which he said that he had gone to the Aranui Motor Inn (by bus. He had not given any (car keys to Rewi and knew (nothing about Mr Forster’s car.

The defence called no evidence.
