Junior swimmers broke 20 records
Twenty records were broken in the first four of seven periods of swimming in the Wharenui "junior Olympics" at the week-end. The "Olympics" will conclude this week-end. It was reported in ’The Press” .yesterday that nine records were broken. Grant Forbes, Paul Fidow. and
Ronald Carlson (all Elmwood),; Janice Murdoch, Craig Whiting i and Eddie Box (Wharenui *. and I Kelvin Bishop (New Brighton/ broke records, and the Wharenui ' boys under 10 freestyle relay) , team broke the- record for this event in its heat. 5 In the under-nine boys 33 1-3; i metres freestyle Fidow beat the) - record by .Isec in 23.95ec. but: in the next heat Forbes took another ,4sec off Fidow’s time. i Whiting, who has just come - to Christchurch from Hawke's Bav, broke two bois under 10 •records. In the 66 2-3 metres ' freestyle, ho took o.2sec off the previous time in recording 51.9 sec, and in the four lengths individual medley he swam 2min _ 17.7 sec, 2.6 sec taster than the old i i time. *: Bishop took O.lsec off the * Hinder 12 boys’ 66 2-3 metres 11butterfly record, with a time of, . 52.45ec. 4j Miss Murdoch broke the under ' ’ 13 girls’ 66 2-3 metres butterfly ’record in her heat and then in y’ithe final. Her heat time of 51.7 isec was O.lsec better than the (previous best time, and she took '[another o.3sec off her heat time ;in the final. - • Carlson reduced the boys’ tinrider 13 66 2-3 metres butterfly record bv 2.4 sec with a time of ’’ 47.55ec. and Box broke the under [ 14 boys’ four lengths individual f medley record by 3.ssec in his heat, with a time of Imin 41sec[ 1 and again in the final (Imin 39.5 S sec). The relay record by the Whare- j . nui boys under 10 team was set in a heat, r.nd the time of Imin s 37.55ec broke the record by V O.lsec.
