Senior hockey contests
Two major changes have been made to the Canterbury Hockey Association's senior competition this season. It will consist of 10 teams, and a grand-final system will be introduced in an endeavour to hold interest in the senior competition until the final Saturday. The competition will have the eight senior teams from last season, plus Redcliffs, which won a promotion-relegation match at the end of last season, and a second High School Old Boys team. The senior reserve grade will also have 10 teams.
The format for the running of I both competitions was decided by : the association’s management committee last evening after; recommendations made by the chairman of the competitions: committee (Mr F. N. Wilson). I
A preliminary competition of a full round of nine games will (be played in the senior grade (for the Championship Shield. The top six from the senior com'petition will then form the senior; | A competition for the Trans Tours championship, and the bottom four teams, with the top two from the senior reserve, will; form senior B and play for the Taylor Trohpy. i In each grade the teams will; plav two full rounds—lo games—- • and at the conclusion of this the top four in senior A will playoff over two weeks for places in! the grand final. First and second, and third] and fourth teams will play in the |first week, the winner of the] (former going straight to the, grand final and the loser of the • latter game dropping out of con-( 'tention. The following week the I loser of the top two teams will ’meet the winner from the bottom
two. The victor will be the <other grand final contestant, ! Mr Wilson said there wotild be prize monev for the grand final winner from the $lOOO ; sponsorship the association has received from Trans Tours this season. Although the change to JO 1 senior teams was only experimental for this season, it was possible the system would be continued next year, and In tU»« case the top four from the senior B—or Taylor Trophy competition—would form the remaindlof the 10 teams for the first round of next season’s competition. High School Old Bovs was | chosen as the tenth team for the .competition because it was considered stronger than Eastern (Suburbs, although it already has a senior side. University (indicated it did not want a second senior team.
