TROTTING Vanadium easily wins cup
Vanadium showed that he will be a leading contender for the Easter Cup next month when he outstayed Royal Ascot and Wag to win the $5OOO New Brighton Cup last evening at Addington Raceway.
Raced by Mr E. J.j Lloyd, of Christchurch, he is trained at Templeton by J. W. Smolenski. who has now won twice: with him this season. As well as Vanadium, Smolenski will have Arapaho and Royal Belmer to represent him in I the Easter Cup. Smolensk! had two earlier* I wins with Gay Rose and Re-i I becca Hanover, Vanadium’s; ■win making the night one of I his most successful for some! time.

Royal Beimer was : beaten off, just ahead of; Berkleigh. which received an interrupted run from the halfimile. i Manaroa broke at the start land finished tenth. Lord Nugent followed some I rather unlucky racing at the repent Auckland meeting with a ; decisive win in the President's I Handicap. G. Holmes sprinted Lord i Nugent up to join Dee Pee in ; front before the half-mile. Local Rose improved to shade Lord Nugent racing to the straight,! with Great Time and Dee Pee! ! close by. Lord Nugent soon mastered! Local Rose and near the finish, Johnny Kirk challenged fast
wide out. Johnny Kirk got up to nose Local Rose out of second, a length in front of the favour-; ite. Great Time, which was six back starting the last half-mile.■ Colonel Adios and Thursa headed i the others. Barbara Del. Onassis. Great) Time. Spangled Mary, Looking; Forward, and Dee Pee broke or: met trouble at the start.
Vanadium made a splendid beginning and he took the lead from Morpheus after two furlongs and a half. A little more than a furlong later he was passed by Dwayne, with Allenton taking over after six furlongs. Smolenski moved Vanadlium off the rails when the field began to bunch shortly after passing the six furlongs and he had control at the half-mile. He was always travelling well and he was not seriously tested in the run home to win by two
