Mrs N. O. Crooke, of Simeon Street, Spreydon, has been curious ever since her brother dug up the brass object illustrated when he was demolishing a hut in Christchurch two months ago. The object, which was buried about 3ft, has been taken by Mrs Crooke to rhe Canterbury Museum and several antique dealers but no-one has been able to tell her what it is or where it came from. Suggestions include a decoration from a buggy, an ornament from, the lid of a burial urn used to hold the ashes of deceased persons, or a decoration from a gate or a door pillar. The object apparently fitted on top of something, because part of a small round stem protrudes from the bottom of it. A small portion is missing from the top, probably a replica of part of the design. Mrs Crooke said she was “dying of curiosity” and becoming more and more determined to find out what exactly the object was.
