Oil spilt in Avon
An oil spillage from a factory in Riccarton coated the jAvbn River early yesterday ; morning. Telephone calls to i the Christchurch Drainage Board began about 7 a.m., and straw bales and a suction pump controlled the leak within an hour. Mr P. J. McWilliam. chief engineer of the Drainage ■Board said that the oil had come from a damaged machine and the spillage was aggravated by a blocked drain at the factory. i He said he would not name (the company until a full re1 port had been prepared, which would include the lia- : bility of the company for proIsecution.
