MAYORS MEET
The Mayor of Christchurch and deputy Mayor of Hanoi l met yesterday morning and through an interpreter discussed two cities, very much apart in distance, culture and life style. Both Mr N. G. Pickering and Vu Dinh questioned oneanother on their individual municipalities during the half an hour in which the three-1 man North Vietnamese trade' mission had morning tea with the Mayor. Mr Pickering said that) although the North Vietnam-1 ese had described the last s bombing of Hanoi by the Americans as the most devastating, neither of the three men appeared to hold any bitterness towards the Americans.
“I got the impression that if an American had walked into the room he would have been quite welcome,” he said. Mr Pickering told the Vietnamese visitors that he hoped all Christchurch citizens would, along with the rest of New Zealand, play their part in seeing that both North and South Vietnam received aid for their rebuilding campaign.
He presented the delegation with signed books showing photographs and paintings of the city.
