More use of flags of convenience

The flag of convenience is so I commonplace on the wafer- I front today, that it scarcely | rates a second glance. The ; most prominent ensigns in this ; category are those of Panama ; and Liberia, but others include ; those of Singapore and Cyprus. one vessel flying the Cypriot ensign (white base, with a yellow map of Cyprus and two green laurel leaves), the Danishowned Arctic Scan, was discharging 13,000 cartons of Florida oranges yesterday. Thirteen years old, the 1485ton. German-built, refrigerated motor vessel, is one of 16 ships owned by Blaesbjerg, of Denmark. These comprise refrigerated vessels and also heavy-lift vessels. Until recently. the Arctic Scan was owned by Harmstorf. of West Germany. The 121-knot vessel was formerly the Gueldensand. and at present is under charter to International Reefers. Her citrus cargo was loaded at Tampa I (Florida), and some was discharged at Auckland. The Arctic Scan is a small, ; compact but comfortable ship, and has a complement of 14. These include a German master. Captain Klaus Pfeiffenberger. of! Emden, a chief officer and chief j and second engineers, also Ger-i mans. The crew is mainly Span-; ish. with one man from the; Philippines. The Arctic Scan will take aboard 240 tons of bagged peas at Timaru, and will load 426 tons of cartoned beans, 56 tons of corn, and nearly seven tons of asparagus at Napier. Her trade is world-wide, but she has not previously visited Lyttelton. Also in port was the Pana-manian-registered, five-year-old. refrigerated motor vessel Silver Fern <5026 tons). Manned by a Soul 11 Korean crew, she was formerly the Japan Line’s Janan IKowhai, a regular caller. Dis-1 charging Japanese general cargo.; including vehicles, she will load refrigerated cargo for return. She is now owned by the Drado Shipping Company. S.A.. but still has the notable Japan Line funnel, teal green with a black top. as she is under charter to her former owners. The flag of convenience is broadening its scope. The ships attract seamen from less favoured nations, and there are plenty of them olTering, it appears. ARRIVAL Wanaka (6.31 a.m.). 2769. Capt.. V. Coleman, Auckland (U.S.S.).
