Jeans firm to start
The international clothing, manufacturers, Levi Strauss and Company, Ltd, the makers of Levi jeans, have announced plans to manufacture and market in New Zealand. The chairman of directors of the San Francisco firm (Mr W. A. Haas, jun.) said yesterday that an agreement had been made with Deanes, Ltd, of Christchurch, to make and distribute Levi clothing later this year. Mr B. Martin has been appointed general manager of the new firm of Levi Strauss (New Zealand), Ltd. Mr Martin has had 16 years experience in the garment industry.
Mr Haas said that the movement of the company into the New Zealand market had been brought about by the enormous demand for the product here. The jeans are sold in more than 50 countries, a big development from when Levi Strauss made his first pair of trousers in 1850.
