Diversion soon at Manapouri
(Neto Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 17. Diversion of the outlet of Lake Manapouri in readiness for construction of the controversial control dam is expected within the next few weeks.
But a decision from the Government will be needed before work begins on the permanent control dam.
One of the first actions of the new Minister of Electricity (Mr McGuigan) was to instruct the Electricity Department that the normal levels of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau were not to be exceeded.
It was not known tonight whether this means that
plans for a wide-base dam will be scrapped. Conservationists fear that such a dam ultimately would result in additions to the top of the dam, and the raising of Lake Manapouri. The general manager of the Electricity Department (Mr P. W. Blakeley) said this evening that the diversion of the Waiau River — the lake’s outlet — did not require any specific approval from the Government. After the river had been diverted, it would be several months before the dam site was dry and excavated ready for foundation work on the permanent dam.
