Scottish lament
Z.P A Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 10 British Rail has taken the wind out of Pipe Major Gordon Speirs’s bagpipes. The pipe major had been hired bv the Scottish Tourist Board to play Highland music at Liverpool Street station to help to publicise a tourist promotion drive, but the railway workers complained that the drone of his pipes was distracting them, and that commuters were unable to hear train announcements because of the music.
So British Rail has confined Pipe Major Spiers's playing to one minute in every 15. hardly enough for the initial grunt and squeal.
This is the second time that British Rail has ordered the pipe major to stop: the previous time was at Victoria Station. "Only the circumstances were different then,” he said. “I had had a •fewdrams. and it was three o'clock in the morning.”
