Energy sources
Sir, —John Collins’s article quotes a typical chemical engineer’s antipathy towards i electricity. Mr Martin fails to appreciate that the real problem is our increasing iise of all forms of energy. Our civilisation will have to rely on electricity if it is to continue at all. which many nowdoubt. Only electricity can be controlled sufficiently finely to avoid the waste in-, herent in small-scale combustion appliances. Electricitygeneration efficiency will
double as soon as magnetohydrodynamic generation (M.H.D.) becomes practical. Many countries have made prototypes, but none have provided the funds to develop it in practical form. Direct use of large-scale solar energy will have to be electric; therefore efficient use of small-scale electrical installations should be encouraged. We must reduce fuel wasted by inadequately insulated buildings, and no further fission reactors should be built to increase the already excessive legacy of lethal wastes from fission reactors. —Yours, etc.. D. W. KING. Rangiora, January 9, 1973.
