N.Z. teams for Canadian sports festival
(N.Z, Press Association) i< AUCKLAND. < New Zealand will be represented in four sports — golf, bowls, polo, and tennis —at the British Columbia Festival of Sport to be held from May 17 to June 4. Competition will be at club level for the New
Zealanders taking part. The festival features 42 dif-[ ferent sports, involving 320 events in 100 communities in the Canadian province. The polo team is being j ■ formed by the Kihikihi and; 'Auckland clubs. Mr J. Ait-| kenhead is assembling the; tennis players and their: [wives. The golfers, who competed last year, will watch [the United States Open tourjnament at Oakmont. Pennsyl-j vania, after the festival. Mr 'G. Coburn, of the Takaouna
dub, is organising the bowlers. After the festival, the tennis players will go to Seattle, while the other groups to ‘ various parts of Canada and the United States. The festival began when the British Columbia Provincial Government created a [slom physical fitness and [ amateur sports fund to assist the growth and development of amateur sport. Last year, this was increased to slsm. More than | $2,225,000 in interest from the fund has been distributed - [to various sports activities.
