Young yachtsmen win
One of the youngest and least experienced of the 26 crews entered for the New Zealand Junior Cherub yachting championship, P. Hoskin and P. Baine (Canterbury), gained a commendable victory in the invitation race for the Rountree Cup at Lyttelton yesterday. Hoskin and Raine progressed from the junior P class only this season and fin-1 ished no higher than fourth in the provincial J.C. trials a month ago.
I They made a particularly! I good beginning and were} I about 150 yards ahead of V.j j Nelson and C. Wales (CanterIbury) at the first mark. I Only once were Hoskin and ‘ Raine'headed. The Auckland pair, A. Gilbert and D. Eise- ‘ monger, wrested so much boat speed from their craft that they turned a third placing and 45sec deficit at the ; wing mark into a 17sec advantage at the completion of I the triangle. But Hoskin and Raine led :by Imin 25sec during the windward leg. Gilbert and Eisemonger did better again [on the second lead, cutting the margin to 55sec before ‘ Hoskin and Raine went clear [ by nearly 3min on the final beat. in a thrilling tussle for runnerl up the only girl skipper in the I contest. Miss R. Shields, and her ■ forward hand, G. Stevenson, ’ failed bv only ssec to catch Gilbert and Eisemonger.
This was an outstanding display by Miss Shields and Stevenson, for they are not members o£ the official Canterbury team. K. Welsh and M. Stevenson (Canterbury) finished sixth in spite of I having their boat holed and 1 hurriedly repaired after a pre-. race mishap. The first two heats of the series will be sailed today.
