Showing the flag

(N.Z Press Assn. — Copyright) MELBOURNE. Jan. 1. A New Zealand flag which dwarfed every other national flag fluttered from a pole alongside Kooyong’s centre court in Melbourne today. The flag represented the end of a 24-hour search by the chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association (Mr 1. W. Wells). It was flying proudly when O. Parun, of New Zealand, met J. D. Newcombe in the final of the Australian men’s singles championships. Parun, the only New Zealander in the tournament, caught the organisers unaware when he surprisingly reached the final.

They had flags of 18 other nations but not a New Zealand flag. Mr Wells picked the oversight on Saturday when he watched Parun win his semi-final. It started a search in which Mr Wells got in touch with Government House, Air New Zealand. T.A.A., and the New Zealand trade commissioner in his search for a flag. “I finally got this one from the caretaker at the Shrine of Remembrance. 1 finalised the deal early this morning and it was delivered to me by taxi at Kooyong,” said Mr Wells. It cost Mr Wells $l.BO for cab fares but it saved New Zealand's national pride.
