JUNIOR TENNIS
Singles title to Simpson
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. ! The top seed and favourite, R. Simpson (North Shore), struggled to beat J.‘ Mills (Auckland), 9-7, 3-6, 6-2, in the final of; the boys’ singles at the Qantas national junior tennis championships on Sunday. Simpson, who was also expected by many to win the event last year, but lost in the quarter-finals, was well below top form in the final against Mills, the No. 2 seed, in the match at Lower Hutt. Miss P. Elliott (Waikato) beat Miss S. Armstrongs (Otago) in the final of the' girls’ singles, 6-3, 5-7, 9-7. It was a match which • could have gone either way, with first Miss Elliott, the) No. 2 seed, taking the initiative, and then Miss Armstrong. But Miss Elliott! proved too steady. The girls’ doubles final; was won by Miss Armstrong! and Miss A. Pryde (Welling- j ton), who beat Miss Newton (Canterbury) and Miss S. i Meachen (Wellington), 6-4,! 6-3. CUP TEAMS At the end of the tourna-! ment, the Linton Cup and, Wilson Cup junior teams j were named. They contained j few surprises. The only questionable deci-i sion was the choice of Miss! S. Meachen as No. 4 in the | girls’ A team, ahead of Southland’s Miss L. Milne, who beat Miss Meachen in the second round. However, the Wellington girl’s over-all consistent form must have counted in her favour. The Linton and Wilson! Cups tourney which includes Australian state teams, will! be played in Christchurch later this month. The teams:—
