Unseeded girl causes more tennis upsets
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Miss L. Milne, the 17-year-old Southlander, continued to provide the surprises on the second day of the Qantas New Zealand junior tennis championships yesterday.
The unseeded Miss Milne, who had beaten the No. 4 seed, Miss S. Meachen (Wellington), on the first day, reached the quarter-finals of the girls’ singles with a straight-set win over Miss J. Goulding (Auckland), 6-3, 6-4.
; Then, in the shock of the | day, she teamed with another | Southland girl, Miss S. Thomson, to eliminate the top seeds, Misses P. Elliott (Waikato) and L. Ward (Auckland), 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of the girls’ doubles. Another seeded player fell in the girls’ singles, Miss J. Garvey (Auckland) beating the No. 7, Miss S. Little (Hawke’s Bay), 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. ( The boys’ singles went al- ' most according to plan, all but one seeded player reaching the final eight. The one to drop out was A.
