Canterbury B holds strong position

Canterbury B was in a strong position after the first day of its two-day match against Wellington B at Hagley Oval yesterday. It was 65 runs behind Wellington with seven first innings wickets standing. Canterbury sent Wellington into bat after winning the toss, and its opening bowlers, L. Sparks and M. Webb, soon had the visitors in trouble on an easy-paced pitch.

The bowlers were assisted by the reluctance of the batsmen to take the initiative and wickets fell steadily until six were down for 54.

A partnership of 126 runs •in 153 minutes between R. ■ Cox and P. Tindall restored ■ the situated for Wellington. iCox hit a six and 10 fours. Canterbury’s reply was swift and positive. A. E. Col- ; lins hit 16 runs from the first five balls of the innings, but two wickets were down for ■22. D. W. Stead and B. Bhana i then added 111 in 82 minutes, i Bhana hooked the short deliveries with authority and 'drove with power in scoring 51, including- seven fours. Stead scored his unbeaten 69 runs in 96 minutes, hitting 10 fours mainly from cuts and drives. WELLINGTON B I. M. Walter b Sparks .. 2 D. Cederwall c Isherwood b Webb 7 B. A.
