Opening chess rounds
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A record total of 88 players are taking part in the New Zealand chess championships which began in Wellington yesterday. The international master, O. Sarapu (Auckland), was in great form, beating A. Pomeroy (Wellington) in 24 moves, while A. Day (Auckland) defeated R. Craig (Wellington) in 20 moves. The present national champion, G. Chiu (Wellington), was involved in a hard battle against V. Small (Canterbury). Small held a pawn advantage in a rook and bishop against a rook and knight ending. Results were: Championship.—A.
