Protocol sought to protect prisoners
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Christchurch has asked the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) to support a move by Amnesty International for a protocol protecting political prisoners in South Vietnam.
According to a report received by the society from the International Committee of Conscience on Vietnam of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, there are about 200.000 political prisoners in South Vietnam. The Thieu Government has complete control of the prisons, and the committee fears that when American influence on the South Vietnamese Government has been removed, no safeguards for civilian prisoners will exist, the report says. The Quakers in Christchurch say that they are convinced of the integrity of the committee which supplied this information, and have
urged Mr Kirk to support representations regarding the safetv of the political prisoners to the four Powers concerned — South Vietnam, the United States (through the United States Ambassador to France), North Vietnam, and the National Liberation Front.
