Visitor for Russians

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Dec. 21.

The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) attended a reception today given by the Russian Ambassador to Canberra to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the Soviet Union. Diplomatic observers believe it is the first time an Australian Prime Minister has attended an official Russian Embassy reception. They said that Mr Whitlam had accepted the Ambassador’s hospitality at a time when Soviet diplomats were becoming concerned that Australia’s new China policy might represent a turning away from Russia.
