Canterbury beats West Coast, 14-2

The Canterbury representative tennis team beat West Coast very comfortably in its third fixture of the season at Wilding Park yesterday. Canterbury lost*one mixed doubles and one men’s singles before lunch so that at that stage it was leading by 10 matches to two and it eventually won, 14-2.

The unusual sight of two lefthanders facing one another occurred in the top men’s singles and D. Blackwell (Canterbury) and J. McArthur (West Coast) were well matched. Blackwell, a good volleyer when he is in touch, lapsed in this department in the second set and also tossed up too many short balls. However, he recovered well, began putting his first service in more often and started to keep an improved length in the third set to win. 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The second singles was also closely fought. D. Wilson (West Coast) had a strong service, but the stocky K. Ottley (Canterbury), covered the court well enough to cope with it and was also slightly the better in the volley. Ottley won, 7-5, 7-5. N. Sadler won the only singles for West Coast when he played steadily to beat R. Brandenburg, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Canterbury’s women were much too strong for their opponents and they lost only seven games in the four singles. At top, Aliss S. Field did not concede a game to Mrs K. Allen and she hit with depth and also went to net at the appropriate times. Aliss S. Aloore, at second for Canterbury, lost two games

to Mrs J. Chambers in the first set but was well in control throughout. Results:— Men’s singles.—D. Blackwell beat J. McArthur, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2; K. Ottley beat D. Wilson, 7-5, 7-5; R.
