Combined tennis team loses first point

The leading team in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior men's competition failed for the first time in four rounds on Saturday to gain the maximum points. It lost its first individual match of the season when N. Blackburn lost to T. Ralfe, of North Linwood, but still won over all, bv 5 matches to 1.

j It is certainly one of the ; best starts a senior men’s ; side has ever had, but the | team was bound to be a I strong one, combining as it I does two players from last I season’s winning Linwood i Avenue side plus two from Woolston, which althohgh it did not do well last season has been one of the grade’s most consistent clubs over a long period. Linwood Avenue - Woolston’s only real rival, even at this stage, is Elmwood, which has also won all its matches but not by such convincing margins. They were to have met in the round scheduled for December 2 but that was postponed by rain. All Saturday’s matches were won with comfortable scores. In the other two fixtures, Elmwood beat United by G matches to 0. and Edgeware beat Shirley by 5 matches to 1. The points are:— Linwood Avenue-Woolston 47, Elmwood 43, United 20, Edgeware 16, North Linwood 14, Shirley 4. Form continues The young top man for Linwood Avenue-Woolston, A. James, continued his wonderful form of this season at the week-! end. As top man for the Canterbury Slazenger Shield side, he was winning his matches but he had a bye in this on Saturday' afternoon so that he could turni out for his chib. ' In spite ot an infection for; I which he has had antibiotics, he‘ played extremely soundly when' he beat another junior who is top man for North Linwood, S. Burns, 6-2. 6-1. Burns went for the lines in an effort to score points but it was James who was the more accurate with the passing shots, and he sometimes left Burns stretching. He moved to the net to cut off returns with well-placed volleys. Burns’s forte was a dropping return off his backhand, just over the net. but he was not able to use this weapon often enough to gain an advantage. The second man for Linwood Avenue-Woolston. the experienced B. J. Aldridge, was as solid as usual when he beat the stylish left-hander. R. Bruce. 6-4, 6-3. Bruce played some spectacular shots, and his slice was accentuated by the wind, but he made the more errors. Blackburn is another with brilliant shots, but he was all at sea against Ralfe and could only obtain one game from a plaver who gave nothing away. The top Canterbury’ representative player, S. Menzies. top fo” Edgeware, was given a good battle by the ynung P. Hampton, of Shirley. Concentrating as diligently 7 as he always does. Hampton won more games than he was expected to. but Menzies was able to play enough balls out of his reach. The score was 6-3. 6-3. Top for Elmwood, W. Edge- 1 cumbe, allowed only one game to R. Webster (United). Edge- ' cumbe returned every ball and Webster, who can play some sound tennis at his best, was sadly off form. Women's matches Only two of the women’s contests begun on Saturday 7 were completed. In these United beat Elmwood by 5 matches to 1. and Edge ware beat Shirley by 4 matches to 2. In the other fixture Avonside has won four matches from Beckenham but one doubles and a singles have to be completed because of the absence of Aliss S. Chapman, of Beckenham, who was plaving with the Canterbury Howe Shield team in Blenheim.

However. Avonside has the winning lead and the remaining matches are solely to tidy up the points. Avonside holds a strong lead in this competition. The points are: Avonside 30, Edgeware 23. United 22. Beckenham 18, Shirley 7. Elmwood 6. The most notable of the individual matches brought a return to form of Miss C. Newton. As top for Shirley, she beat Mrs J. Langford, top for Edgeware, and one of the leading Canterbury representative players. 7-6, 2-6 6-2. Miss Newton began the season . well, but her play dropped off after that and she was selected only as non-travelling reserve i for the Canterbury Howe Shield ; team. This win should boost r her confidence. She played some - attractive attacking tennis and ■ allowed her opponent to make the mistakes. Airs D. McKinnel- (Avonside) J • top of the Canterbury Nunnely! Casket team, was also pushed; to three sets by a innior. Miss! A. Meates. Mrs McKinnel won, 6- 4-6. 6-2, but she was often troubled by Miss Meates’s deep shots. Airs C. Armitage (United) had ’ one of her better davs when she beat Miss S. Field (Elmj wood). 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. with drives to the corners and sound overhead. SENIOR MEN Elmwood y. United Singles.—W.
