Turnbull Library
An old brick building in Wellington’s Bowen Street houses one of the most comprehensive collections of books and artefacts dealing with New Zealand and the Pacific. In fact Alexander Turnbull’s library is one of the important libraries of the world. But soon the library will be moved. A documentary film shows an ordinary day at the library, except that it also shows the film being made. The film-makers meet the staff and talk to Dr Eric McCormick, a New Zealand scholar and biographer on Turnbull. A glimpse is given of the treasures, which include thousands of paintings and sketches, half a million photographs and an important collection of manuscripts. Many of the precious first editions can no longer stand up to handling, and micro-filming is proceeding. “Alexander Turnbull’s Library” is a National Film Unit production produced by R. Bowie and directed by Paul Maunder. Executive producer was Geoffrey Scott. It screens from the N.Z.B.C. television nextwork on Sunday.
