Report stresses Kiwis’ needs
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Future New Zealand sides going to the Rugby league World Cups in the northern hemisphere should take 22 or 23 players instead of 19, and play several lead-up matches.
This year’s manager, Mr T. Wellsmore, made this one of his main points in his report to the New Zealand League council on a trip where the Kiwis won only one of their six games. He said that the lead-up matches would give the team a chance to settle down and find a combination. And the extra players would ensure that there would be 19 fit players ready for the cup senes. Other recommendations made by Mr Wellsmore were: That an under 23 or junior Kiwi side should play in Australia against teaffis of similar age; That more individual coaching of players by former Kiwis and graded coaches should be held; That a fitness programme started by Mr M. Rendle, of the Auckland Y.M.C.A., should continue. He said that an important
need was to attract bigger and stronger forwards, particularly for the front row. The coach, Mr D. A. Barchard, agreed. “Apart from getting their wind and legs right, we have to get our forwards tougher round the shoulders and the chest,” he said in his report
