Norway and E.E.C.

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS, Dec. 6. The Norwegian Minister of Commerce and Shipping (Mr Hallvard Eika) said yesterday that he did not believe Norway would make a new application for Common Market membership for another four or five years. Mr Eika told a press conference: “I can easily see that things could happen in Europe, in the world, and in Norway, that could make membership a question of actuality, but I cannot see that happening for another four or five years.” Asked whether this meant that he did not forsee a new application until after the 1977 Norwegian General Election, he replied: “Yes, that is my personal view.” Mr Eika is in Brussels to deliver a memorandum to the E.E.C. authorities, setting out Norway’s position in negotiations on a free trade agreement as a substitute for full membership of the Community.
