Funds sought for time-ball station

The Lyttelton Maritime Association is keen to hold a full-scale appeal for funds next year, with a target of $12,000, says the president (Mr A. Wright).

In recent years the association has worked hard to preserve and restore the historical time-ball station on East Lyttelton heights, but much more money is needed. The station came into use in December, 1876. Mr Wright said yesterday that the time-ball station was one of the few of its type in the world still standing. It now has tenants, and this protects it from vandalism. Mr Wright has had valuable data from the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. He said he had learned that, apart from the Greenwich time-ball station, on which the Lyttelton station was modelled, there was only one in the United Kingdom—at Calton. Edinburgh, The Lyttelton time-ball station was of much greater importance than the people of Canterbury seemed to realise. Mr Wright said. On Saturday, December 16, the time ball will be dropped at 1 p.m. in the traditional manner, revived by the Maritime Association in recent years. This will mark Anniversary Day. In early days, visiting navigators checked their chronometers in this manner. s[s s!s 6s

Waterfront workers, seamen, and many Lyttelton folk who call at “The Press” office in Lyttelton will be sorry to learn that the cheerful newsagent, Mr H. M. W. Turnbull (“Scotty”), one of Lyttelton’s earliest risers, is at present Indisposed, but is expected to resume duty soon. 6s 6s * The Union Steam Ship Company’s intercolonial motor vessel Tarawera arrived at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon with 24,000 cases of Victorian oranges for discharge.
