Official report, prices

The official report on yesterday's Timaru wool sale, issued by the South Canterbury Woolbrokers' Association, the New Zealand Woolbuyers' Association, and the New Zealand Wool Marketing Corporation, says:— “The third Timaru sale for the season was held in St Patrick’s Hall, when 18,087 bales of greasy and three bales of scoured wool were offered. The proportions were 13 per cent Merino fleece. 16 per cent halfbred fleece, 4f per cent crossbred fleece, and 25 per cent oddments. The wools came from South and Mid Canterbury, and a few clips from North Otago. The Mackenzie Country had the usual selection of Merino wools. “Compared with the recent Christchurch sale, coarse crossbreds were up to 2J per cent dearer, with fine and medium crossbreds in sellers’ favour Fine to strong halfbreds were in sellers’ favour, with extra fine halfbreds 2J per cent to 5 per cent dearer. Merino wools were fully 5 per cent dearer Halfbred and crossbred skirtings improved by 2} per cent.” Competition was fairly general the report says, the Continent being the main competitor, with support from Japan and Eastern Europe. Local mills were the chief buyers of Merino. Bradford was more active, particlularly on woolly hogget. Prompt date for the sale is Decembei 27, 1972.

Wool firm Prices for all classes of wool at the Sydney wool sale today remained fully firm with yesterday’s closing levels, and there was a 100 per cent clearance to the trade of 20,600 bales. Only 16 of the 19,282 bales on offer were passed in on the second day of the Adelaide sale, where prices were again in the seller’s favour. — Sydney, Dec. 6.
