Industrials and miners firm in Australia

Prices were firmer on Australian exchanges yesterday, and many of the mining and industrial issues recovered the losses of the slight post-election slump.

The Bank of N.S.W. and Philip Morris were 20c stronger to 980 c and 1520 c in the industrial market. B.H.P. displayed weakening tendencies in opening trade, losing ground. However the stock firmed to remain unchanged at 1130 c. Ansett dropped 8c to 100 c. The company held its annual meeting yesterday amid fears of the outcome of the Labour move to reduce Trans Australia Airline’s fares. Among industrials to rise 10c were Brickworks, Conkey, E.Z. Industries and Waltons. Burns Philp gained 12c to 502 c and Isherwood and Dreyfus, which held its annual meeting, added 3c at 160 c after a rise of 17c the previous day. Retailers were stronger. Walton’s rose, Grace Bros gained 3c to 311 c and David Jones moved 4c higher to 197 c. T.N.T. gained 8c to 288 c and Tooths Brewery gathered 9c to 388 c. In Sydney Hamersley firmed 5c to 305 c and Great Boulder moved 3c to 153 c. Roeboume gathered 25c to 280 c and Scamander edged 2c higher to 14c, and Western Mining showed out with a 10c gain to 340 c.
