Modular house

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 5. Industrialised Building Systems (1.8.5.) have spent seven years’ work and slm on research and development of a modular building system and today workmen began to move a prototype modular house to a test site in New Lynn.

When fully assembled on the site, the house—to consist of nine modules—-will have a floor area of about 1400 square feet, and contain three bedrooms. Once the system is in commercial production (the company hopes this will be in the latter part of 1974) purchasers will be able to order from a possible 1000 different design variations, made up using 25 basic modules. 1.8.5. which is also developing a modular motel unit and a vacation cottage, hopes that its houses will be 10 per cent cheaper per square foot than a conventional building. Finance for all the 1.8.5. programme has come from V. K. Clark, of Palmerston North, land developers. 1.8.5. is the research and development division of Mr Clark’s company, Land and Building Systems, Ltd, of Palmerston North.
