CONFERENCE ON EXERCISE

Coincidence with Games A conference with the theme of “Exercise in health and disease” Will be held in Wellington to coincide with the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch in 1974. The conference will be organised by the Wellington Post-Graduate Medical Society. The National Heart Foundation recently granted $2OOO towards the cost of an overseas speaker at the conference, on the understanding that he would visit other centres in New Zealand. Because of the serious shortage of trained cardiac pathologists, the Heart Foundation plans to support a training fellowship in cardiac pathology in association with leading pathologists. The foundation hopes to be able to call for applications next year. It is envisaged that the person appointed will be based in one of the major centres when fully qualified, but will be available to other centres as required. The foundation has also agreed to embark on an education campaign for general practitioners, to consist of sending them technical reports on cardiac subjects — such as how to treat a person with a raised cholesterol level — and other guidelines for various cardiac disorders.
