Visit by Lee 'on cards’

(N.Z.P.A, Staff Correspondent; SINGAPORE, Dec. 5. The Prime Minister of Singapore (Mr Lee Kuan Yew) might visit New Zealand and Australia early next year, according to informed sources in Singapore. The sources said an early trip by Mr Lee to meet the new Labour Prime Ministers of both countries was "well on the cards.”

Mr Lee had planned to visit New Zealand and Australia earlier this year, but he called off the trip. It is understood he did not want to visit those countries during election year for fear his trip would be interpreted as an attempt to influence the elections. • Observers believe Mr Lee would prefer that New Zealand and Australian intentions on the future of the Commonwealth five-Power defence arrangements for South-East Asia be made clear before his visit.
