Edgeware wins
Admitted to the senior women’s competition last week after a protest about having to play in a relegation match earlier. Elmwood lost, 2-4 to Edgeware in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s senior women’s competition. AU matches on Saturday were postponed because of wet courts. Elmwood, which wiU have Mrs R. Hunt, Canterbury’s top player and second in New Zealand, back in the side after Christmas, is now up with play because the result of its relegation match with Beckenham can count as a first-round match and it has played its second round with Edgeware which had a bye on that day. Adjusted points are: — Avonside 20, Beckenham 18, Edgeware 13 United 11, Shirley 5, Elmwood 5. Results:— Singles. — Miss S. Field lost to Mrs J. Langford, 64, 4-6, 6-7; Mrs A. Chambers beat Miss G. Iredale, 6-1, 6-2; Miss E. Smith lost to Miss A. McQueen. 3-6, 0-6; Mrs M. Cooper beat Miss J. Miles, 62, 5-0 (default). Doubles. — Miss Field and Mrs Chambers lost to Mrs Langford and Miss Miles, 3-6, 4-6; Mrs Cooper and Miss Smith lost to Misses McQueen and Iredale, 63, 67, 4-6. Edgeware won by four matches to two.
