RAILWAY UNREST
Warning ;by Minister <N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 7. Locomotive drivers and other members of the Auckland branch of the Engine Drivers, Firemen’s and Cleaners Association who refused to undertake normal duties from midnight tomorrow would be suspended, said the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) tonight. Mr Gordon said that the drivers intended to limit the pulling power of locomotive engines from midnight tomorrow, apparently as an expression of disappointment with the recent decision of the; Railways Tribunal not to give drivers all the wage increase sought for the new DX • locomotives to be used on the I Silver Star run between | Auckland and Wellington. “They have refused to op-1 erate diesel-electrical locorno- j fives in multiple, that is, for ’double-heading’ trains,” Mr! Gordon said. “Similar action has been threatened by the Dunedin and Palmerston North branches of the association, and other branches are conducting ballots to decide what action they will take.” "The reaction of these branches is a complete rejection of the tribunal’s decision. and it cannot be condoned in any way,” Mr Gordon said. “It has left me in a position in which I must take firm and positive action. I intend to do just that.”
