Man freed

An 18-year-old driver was cut from a utility vehicle after crashing into a telegraph pole in Oxford Road, west of Rangiora. at 2.40 a.m. yesterday. The driver, Brian Edward Sinclair, of 80 Hilton Street, Kaiapoi, had his legs pinned under the dashboard. An emergency tender with special cutting equipment was called from the Christchurch Central Fire Station, but the driver of a local break-down truck, Mr H. G. Jones, cut the injured man out with a hand hacksaw and the Christchurch unit was redirected by radio-telephone before reaching Rangiora. The Rangiora Volunteer fire Brigade stood by in case of fire. Mr Sinclair was taken to Christchurch Hospital by the Rangiora St John ambulance. He was admitted to the resuscitaiton ward, where his condition last evening was described as fair.
