GEORGE LOSES

Title taken by Dunne * (N.Z P.A.-Reuter—CopvrtQhtI MELBOURNE The New Zealander. Toro George, has lost his Commonwealth featherweight boxing championship. He went down to the Australian, Bobby Dunne, on a points decision in a fiercely fought bout over 15 rounds at Melbourne's Festival Hall. The referee, Mr T. Reilly, scored them even at the start of the last round and Dunne the winner by one point. George, aged 29, won the title when it was vacant on a six-round technical knockout over Ken Bradley at Canberra two years ago. In his only previous defence, George outpointed Evan Armstrong (Scotland) in Melbourne last year when Armstrong was the British title-holder. Dunne, aged 23, a Melbourne garage attendant, was a former amateur star. His previous longest fight performance was only eight rounds. George doggedly tried to outpunch and outstay the more lightly-built Dunne, but the Australian surprised bv shaking off the effects of the New Zealander’s best punches.
