The trotters forgiven
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, November 7. “Yvonne and Mum” have forgiven the trotters. “Yvonne”—Mrs Y. Ward, of Turangi —and “Mum”—her mother, Mrs V. Burling, of Turangi—today won the .$200,000 prize in the New Zealand Trotting Cup sweepstake.
Tonight they were taking their success calmly and quietly, and were not talking to reporters.
But a family friend said the Burling family once owned a trotter called
Bravado. It had won for its previous owner but didn’t win for them.
Mrs Burling felt she had been too kind to the horse. But now, she was quoted as saying, “The trotters have paid back our losses with interest.” Neither winner has any immediate plans on how to spend the money. Mrs Ward is employed by the Ministry of Works cleaning offices in the evenings. She plans to keep her job until Christmas. HUSBAND IN HOSPITAL Her husband, who is in hospital, works as a painter with the Ministry. Mrs Burling’s husband is a retired employee of the Ministry of Works. He now works as a gardener at the Turangi Primary School. Both winners heard this morning that a ticket with the nom-de-plume, “Yvonne and Mum Syndicate,” had drawn a horse. But they were not sure of the ticket number and thought it might have been someone else with the same nom-de-plume. It was only just before the race that their ticket number was confirmed.
