N.M.S. SCHEME TO STAND
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, October 19.
There is no intention of abandoning the National Military Service scheme, according to the review of defence policy tabled in Parliament todav.
The report states that an infantry brigade group or its equivalent is the basic tactical grouping of infantry and other combat units able to take part in sustained ground operations, and to work in close liaison with supporting air forces. A wholly regular deployable force of 8500, the report concludes, would be an
extremely costly investment for New Zealand. It also doubts the flexibility of a fully-regular force to adjust to changes in economic circumstances. “In any case it would be a heavy charge on the economy," the report says. “It is estimated that it would cost not less than $44.7m a year, including pay, clothing, rations, travelling expenses, plus an annual sum for capital equipment.” The cost of a force of the same size under the present regular plus territorial mixture, assessed on the same basis, is about sl3m a year.
