Poll move opposed

The Minister of Local Government (Mr Highet) will be told by the Waimairi County Council that it would oppose the removal for the provision for a poll from the Local Government Commission Act. The council resolved this last evening on the recommendation of its finance, traffic and by-laws committee. It also resolved to ask the major political parties for their policies on the poll provisions in the act. The committee’s report said Cr J. B. Russ had spoken of a report that the Minister had said there were some who favoured excluding the need for a poll from the act. The councillor said the Waimairi council should make it clear it did not subscribe to such a view. Cr Russ said he understood the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) also favoured the removal of the poll provision. The act makes provision for a poll of ratepayers on the question of local government amalgamations.
