U.S. Navy gift

The sum of $1640 was yesterday handed over by the commanding officer of McMurdo Station during the last winter (Commander R. Mautino) to a representative of the Freemasons of Christchurch.

The money was raised at a station concert to mark the return of the sun to the Antarctic in August. One hundred and sixty-eight members of the wintering party contributed. The money will be used by the Freemasons for distribution to needy and underprivileged children in the community. Commander Mautino said the donation was one way of thanking the people of Christchurch for their personal support and encouragement given to the men of the Navy’s support force,
