PLAYER’S ILLNESS
Mrs King off circuit (.VZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) BOCA RATON (Florida). The American, Mrs B. King, may have contracted an infectious blood disease that has put Miss L. Hunt, of Australia, out for a while, Associated Press reported. Mr L. King, husband of the top-ranked American player, said that Mrs King might be out of action for several months. He said she believed she was suffering from mononucleosis.
“Billie Jean was very close to Leslie Hunt earlier this month,” Mr King said, “and Leslie had mono. It was contagious for three weeks or so. “It is no longer contagious from her, but she went home to Australia after she was beaten in Florida. She was just hanging on before she went home. “Billie Jean has been dragging for the past 10 days. She could hardly finish her match against Chris Evert.”
Mrs King was beaten, 6-4, 6-2, in a semi-final of the Virginia Slims championship.
Immediately after the match she saw her doctor who said he was fairly sure she had mononucleosis and if tests proved positive said she would be off the circuit for about two months.
