Support for S.I. dock

Any new docking facility should be in the South Island, as a sound economic proposition and also as a positive step towards correcting the industrial imbalance in the country, the South Island Local Bodies’ Association’s conference decided yesterday. It agreed to support a case to the New Zealand Ports Authority and the Minister of Marine (Mr Gordon).

Mr J. B. Collett, the Mayor of Lyttelton, said that docks in New Zealand were becoming out of date. The Lyttelton Harbour Board, his council and interested organisations had prepared a welldocumented case for Lyttelton to be the site. He said a remit did not specify Lyttelton because he did not know if there were proposals elsewhere.

Mr G. A. Douglas, of St Kilda, said that both Lyttelton and Dunedin had excellent engineering facilities, and either could cope adequately.
