No fault in N.Z. version
Locally-assembled models of the Morris Marina would not have the steering fault of the Australian version, which has caused its recall there for minor modifications, Mr T. H. Thomson, the manager of the New Zealand Motor Corporation’s Morris division in Christchurch, said yesterday. A cable report from Canberra yesterday said that Leyland (Australia), Ltd, was to recall all 9500 Morris Marinas sold so far in Australia, so that improved steering-rack clamps could be fitted.
“I haven’t been notified of the report yet, but New Zealand assembled Marinas should not have the fault, as it is an entirely different operation here,” Mr Thomson said. Very few models had been imported from Australia because of the shortage there. However, he said that such models would probably need the modification. A company spokesman in Canberra said that the recall was the result of finding five cars with unsatisfactory steering. Improved clamps would be fitted to future Marinas. The Marina, • a compact family car, was Leyland's answer to the Japanese takeover of Australia’s small-car market.
