Wage offer rejected
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 2.
Negotiations for a new oil stores employees award have broken down over a wage rise offer of 6 per cent by employers. Conciliation between the Storemen and Packers’ Union and the Oil Industry Union of Employers was adjourned to November 8.
The secretary of the Storemen and Packers’ Union (Mr P. J. Mansor) said today that his members were not prepared to accept less than 9.5 per cent. “They wouldn’t go beyond the 6 per cent agreed to in the carpenters’ award,” he said. “If we accepted the 6 per cent we would just be making up the increase in the cost of living over the last six months. “It wouldn’t be so bad if it was back-dated, but if we took the 6 per cent, then our members would be out of pocket for the next 12 months.” Mr Mansor said the employers made some “quite good” offers—reducing the adult pay rate to 18 years, and substantial increases in female rates as a prelude to equal pay.
