BIDDLE INVITED FOR BIG CYCLING TOUR
Mr C. J. Hollows, of Palmerston North, had a secondary objective when he managed the New Zealand cycling team at the Munich Olympic Games—to secure a top European rider to follow the great Fedor den Hertpg as the star attraction in the Family Tavern Tour of the Manawatu.
And it is a reflection on that rider’s great deeds overseas that Mr Hollows has invited B. W. Biddle, the New Zealander, who has been overseas since he won
the 1970 Commonwealth Games road race, to compete in the Labour week-end tour. “We were considering Neils Fredborg, the winner of the kilometre time trial on the track,” said Mr Hollows. “But once Bruce had ridden that great race for fourth at Munich, there was no question of the man we
wanted.” It was, said Mr Hollows, a tribute to that fine effort of Biddle’s that he has been invited back to New Zealand for a solo performance — possibly his last in this country
before he turns profes-
sional. The Rothman’s Tour of Southland has also attracted a quality field for the race which starts
— in emulation of last year’s Canterbury tour—with a time trial the evening before. It will be on Wednesday, October 16, and sponsored by the N.Z.B.C. As well as D. Allan, a prominent figure in the Tour of Tasmania at present in progress, another well-known Australian who has entered is D. Wilson. Many times an Australian representative at Olympic or Commonwealth Games, Wilson rode last year’s Dulux tour. Otherwise, the field is very similar to that for the Canterbury tour, but with the addition of V. R. Richards and J. I. Ryder, two New Zealand representatives at present in Tasmania.
