M. Hailwood, of Britain, secured the 1972 Formula Two motor-racing world championship when he finished second behind T. Schenken (Australia). Schenken sent his Brabham over the finishing line way ahead of his competitors after Ihr 7min 23.45ec, Hailwood was second in a Surtees in Ihr 7min 40.6 sec, and third was Sweden’s R. Peterson whose March followed close on the new champion’s tail-pipe in Ihr 7min 42.8 sec. The double Formula One world champion, G. Fittipaldi, the Formula One world champion this year, gave Schenken a good run for his money, but dropped out in the ninth round when his Lotus developed mechanical trouble.

Boxing.—R. Zami (France) lost the European junior welterweight boxing title when he was outpointed over 15 rounds in Istanbul by C. Kamachl (Turkey).
