Pay rise ‘guide’

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. The Remuneration Authority’s decision to allow carpenters their 6.1 per cent increase would certainly be taken as a guide to other unions, said the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner). Among national awards due for re-negotiation are awards for engineers, electrical workers, drivers, labourers, and printers. Uncertainty over the action of the Remuneration Authority would take had unsettled other unions, Mr Skinner said.

“I don’t think the authority could now deny any increases below 6.1 per cent without contradicting itself. And neither do I think it can hold all award increases down to 6.1 per cent."
