WAHINE WRECK
Rips, dents in section (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. Sections of the Wahine's double bottom, showing huge rips and dents when she hit Barrett’s Reef, were landed at Miramar this week. An indication also of how heavily the ship hit the rocks, forcing up her stern, is shown by a twisted 15indiameter propeller shaft. Yesterday and on Monday three large sections of the wreck were lifted by the harbour board’s floating crane Hikitia. They were part of the port side containing fresh-water tanks and machinery weighing 80 tons, a portion of the double bottom weighing 65 tons, and a 45-ton section of E deck.
The leader of the salvage team (Captain J. A. Anderson) said that only 1100 tons of material remained to be removed and he hoped the job would be over by next July.
Work on removal of the wreck began in August, 1968, four months after the ship sank. Since then more than 6000 tons of material has been removed.
